Enhancing Students’ Self-Determination Through Student-AI Collaboration

Self-determination—the ability to act as a causal agent with skills and attitudes that enable him/her to cause things to happen in one’s life—is a cornerstone of personal and academic growth. As artificial intelligence (AI) increasingly transforms our daily lives, utilizing AI to enhance students' self-determination presents a significant opportunity. This blog explores how to leverage AI for students’ self-determination, emphasizing teachers’ roles.

Understanding Self-Determination

Self-determination refers to the skills and attitudes that enable individuals to set meaningful goals, make decisions, and solve problems. The Self-Determined Learning Model of Instruction (SDLMI) is an evidence-based model that promotes students’ self-determination through three phases: setting goals, taking action, and reflecting on progress. However, implementing SDLMI in classrooms for ALL students can be challenging due to resource constraints, such as teachers’ time, effort, and high program costs.

Why is Student-AI Collaboration Needed?

 Generative AI (e.g., ChatGPT, Copilot, and Gemini) can effectively support students. However, since this support is evaluated and used critically by the students' AI Literacy, it is not a simple usage but a student-AI collaboration driven by students. Then why is this collaboration needed? First, Generative AI can provide students with unlimited, tailored, interactive, and real-time feedback to reduce the cost (e.g., time effort). Second, this collaboration can enhance students' outcomes (e.g., self-efficacy and self-regulation).

Practical Application: Leveraging AI for SDLMI

Generative AI can be seamlessly integrated into the SDLMI phases:

Phase 1: Set a Goal

Teachers play a vital role in guiding students to set meaningful goals by providing examples and utilizing the SMART Goal framework, ensuring that these goals are realistic and achievable. By modeling goal-setting strategies, teachers demonstrate how to create specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound goals. They also encourage students to reflect on their aspirations, values, and interests, helping them articulate these ideas before leveraging generative AI for brainstorming. While generative AI can assist in refining goals through structured prompts, teachers actively monitor these interactions to review and ensure that the goals are realistic and aligned with the student’s abilities and circumstances. Additionally, teachers foster an awareness of the importance of goal setting, emphasizing its value for personal and academic growth.

Phase 2: Take Action

Teachers are crucial in helping students develop practical strategies and skills for independent problem-solving and resource utilization, such as time management, task analysis, task prioritization, and resource evaluation. Teachers can provide initial templates or examples of effective strategies by scaffolding action plans and guiding students to break complex goals into manageable steps. While generative AI can suggest resources and actions, teachers enhance these suggestions by aligning them with the classroom's specific curriculum or local context, ensuring relevance and applicability. Additionally, teachers encourage accountability by creating structures for students to share their plans during class discussions or peer reviews, fostering both responsibility and collaborative learning.

Phase 3: Adjust Goal or Plan 

Teachers play a key role in encouraging students to reflect critically on their progress, identify challenges, and determine areas for improvement. They facilitate this process by designing structured reflection activities that guide students in assessing their experiences with the SDLMI process, lessons, and collaboration with generative AI. Teachers also work closely with students to analyze their progress, helping them recognize barriers or strengths that generative AI might overlook while offering additional insights and encouragement. When students feel frustrated or discouraged, teachers provide emotional support and reinforce resilience by teaching growth mindset principles, emphasizing that setbacks are opportunities for learning and growth. Additionally, teachers ensure that any adjustments to goals or plans remain aligned with students’ broader, long-term objectives, helping them maintain a clear sense of purpose.

General Role of Teachers in AI Integration

Teachers are essential in balancing AI tools with human interaction. They ensure that AI complements, rather than replaces, traditional teaching methods. Educators guide students in responsible AI use, teaching them to evaluate AI outputs critically. By fostering a supportive environment, teachers help students feel comfortable experimenting with AI and owning their learning journey.

Making AI Use Meaningful

Leveraging Generative AI to implement a self-determination learning model, such as SDLMI, offers transformative potential for education. By harnessing AI tools, students can enhance their problem-solving abilities, develop actionable plans, and reflect on their progress with increased autonomy. As facilitators and mentors, teachers ensure that AI is used meaningfully and equitably and takes a role only humans can play (e.g., emotional support). AI and educators empower students to lead self-determined lives in an increasingly AI-driven world.
