
Practical AI Integration for Special Education Teacher Preparation (Part Three)

This three-part series will highlight technology integration with a focus on AI for the next generation of special education professionals. The first post will provide an overview of the changing technology landscape in special education, including how AI is reshaping instructional planning, accessibility tools, and professional expectations for both teachers and researchers.
The second post will focus on department-level strategies for preparing future personnel — from faculty development and curriculum updates to research priorities and collaborative partnerships that position programs to lead in the AI era.
The third post will provide practical AI integration ideas for immediate use in courses, including low-lift syllabus updates, in-class activities, and practicum tie-ins that help candidates apply AI tools responsibly and effectively in real-world teaching scenarios.
As the new academic year begins, most of us are balancing the realities of teaching, research, and service with the urgency of preparing our candidates for classrooms that already include AI. That doesn’t always mean a massive course redesign; this means embedding AI literacy and practical use into the flow of your existing syllabi and activities.
Here’s how to start this semester without overhauling your entire program.
1. Low-Lift Syllabi Integrations
You don’t need to overhaul your entire course to prepare candidates to become AI-ready. Minor, intentional updates to your syllabus can build AI literacy without adding heavy grading loads or new prep burdens. These low-lift integrations fit naturally into your existing assignments, reflections, and course policies, helping candidates think critically about AI as a tool for teaching and learning.
- AI Tool Evaluation Assignment
Add a one-page “Technology Analysis” assignment where candidates select an AI-powered tool (e.g., lesson generators, reading assistants, accessibility tools) and evaluate it for instructional value, privacy, and accessibility for students with disabilities.
Sample prompt: “Choose an AI tool relevant to your content area. Test it using a real or mock instructional scenario. Write a short report evaluating its accuracy, usefulness, and accessibility.” - AI Reflection Question in Weekly Journals
Embed one AI-related prompt into your regular reflection journals.
Example: “If you could use AI to adapt today’s lesson for a student with [specific need], what would you do and why?” - Syllabus Statement on AI Use
Include a brief course policy on AI that sets expectations and models how to use it responsibly, just as you would for technology in general.
Example statement for AI use: AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Grammarly) may be used to support learning and lesson planning when permitted by the instructor or the assignment. Any AI assistance must be acknowledged in your work, and it is your responsibility to verify for accuracy and appropriateness. Do not submit completely AI-generated work as your own, and never enter personal or confidential information into AI tools. Responsible use of AI is a critical part of your preparation for modern learning environments, and you should learn to use these tools as both a learner and an educator. Within this class, I welcome reflection and conversation on the use of these tools as we all learn to use them together.
2. Quick In-Class Activities
Sometimes the fastest way to prepare candidates for AI in teaching is to let them experiment with it. Short, interactive activities help candidates see both AI's potential and limits. These exercises can fit into a single class period and spark deeper conversations about when, why, and how to use AI in special education. Facilitating these activities can also help you learn, think, and reflect on how to integrate AI within your teaching.
- “Human vs. AI” Lesson Design (20–30 minutes)
Provide a teaching objective. Half the class uses AI to design a mini-lesson, the other half designs it manually. Discuss similarities, differences, and how to merge the best of both approaches. - Prompt Engineering Warm-Up (10 minutes)
Give candidates a basic teaching task (e.g., “create a differentiated reading activity for a student with dyslexia” [or x characteristics]) and have them craft prompts for ChatGPT, Claude, or another AI tool. Compare how prompt wording changes the result. - Data Detective Challenge (15 minutes)
Present AI-generated instructional content with subtle inaccuracies. Candidates work in pairs to spot errors and propose fixes, building both critical thinking and AI evaluation skills.
3. Practicum and Fieldwork Tie-Ins
Real-world exposure is where AI learning truly takes hold. Embedding AI-focused observations or small projects into practicum and fieldwork helps candidates connect classroom discussions to actual school practices. This bridges theory with practice, preparing them to navigate AI use in authentic learning environments. These fieldwork tie-ins also help you understand how teachers, students, and parents are using AI in their day-to-day practice.
- AI Observation Form
Add one line to your practicum observation forms: “Describe any AI tools observed and how they were used in instruction or student support.” This encourages candidates to notice and analyze real-world AI applications. - School-Based Mini-Project
Partner with cooperating teachers to let candidates pilot an AI tool for lesson adaptation, data collection, or formative assessment, followed by a short report and in-class presentation.
4. Keep It Manageable
Remember to start small. If you’re just beginning, add one syllabus activity, one in-class practice, and one practicum tie-in this semester. Expand a bit more each semester as your comfort grows.
The goal is not to make candidates AI experts overnight; it’s to help them think critically and creatively about using AI as one of many tools in their special education teaching toolkit.
5. Help the Field Learn
Remember to reflect on how these things work for you and share with others. Consider gathering data to evaluate or even researching how these things work at your university. Integrating AI into special teacher education is a hot topic for journals and conferences.
