The Integration of AI Chatbots in Education for Preservice Teachers

Artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots in education are revolutionizing the preparation of pre-service teachers, transforming how they access learning and instructional resources. These educational assistants offer numerous benefits and opportunities, but practical implementation requires careful and critical evaluation. This blog explores the current use of AI chatbots in education, their benefits, and the need for critical assessment in their application.

The Rise of Educational AI Chatbots

AI-generated assistants such as MagicSchool.ai, Ludia, and EL- Education and Learning in Inclusive Environments are increasingly utilized in the educational sector, particularly for pre-service teachers. According to a systematic literature review by Okonkwo and Ade-Ibijola (2021), chatbot systems are primarily used for teaching and learning purposes. They serve as virtual tutors, providing personalized instructional support based on individual learning deficiencies, processes, and personalities (Song et al., 2022). By interacting with these educational assistants, pre-service teachers are enhancing their theoretical knowledge and instructional design skills (Lui et al., 2023). This emphasizes the importance of equipping educators to evaluate the information presented by all AI-generated educational tools critically.

Benefits of AI Chatbots in Education

The benefits of AI chatbots in education are substantial. For one, they can significantly improve the quality of teacher training. These virtual assistants can support an iterative learning process, where pre-service teachers refine their prompts and questions to obtain helpful output information. This iterative approach should not only be used to help educators acquire knowledge, but teacher educators should also use this process to develop pre-service teachers’ critical thinking skills. Lui et al. (2023) found that educators were generally satisfied with the information quality provided by chatbots. Therefore, their use should be carefully scaffolded due to the influence of chatbots on pre-service educators’ learning. Teacher educators should guide learners in assessing whether the content received by these AI assistants is accurate, evidence-based, and meets educational standards.  

The Importance of Critical Evaluation

Despite the many advantages, the vast resources provided by AI necessitate a critical evaluation of the output from these chatbots. Several AI-generated educational tools need to provide references or sources of their information. Pre-service teachers should be guided to use AI chatbots thoughtfully, focusing on creating high-quality prompts and asking successive questions to derive valuable information. Additionally, educators must be prepared to assess the credibility and accuracy of the information and data retrieved from these AI systems. 

Fostering pre-service educators’ critical thinking skills in AI  is essential. They need to be equipped to evaluate the credibility of AI-generated content. This includes asking a few essential questions: 

  • Are the sources of the information available for review? 
  • Is the source of this information credible?
  • Is the output evidence-based? 
  • Is the output inclusive and representative of the student population? 

Preparation is Key

Preservice educators must be aware of the capabilities and limitations of AI systems. Critical assessment of AI-generated content highlights the need for human oversight in using AI chatbots and tools. Teacher educators should emphasize the relevance of evaluating AI educational tools, ensuring to preservice teachers that educators retain control over critical decisions (Cardona et al., 2023). When educators are equipped with the skills to evaluate AI content, they can harness the benefits of AI while mitigating potential risks and ensuring responsible use of the technology.

Integrating AI chatbots in education significantly advances teaching and learning, offering substantial benefits for preservice teachers. These virtual assistants can enhance theoretical knowledge, improve instructional design skills, and provide personalized learning experiences. However, to harness these technologies' full potential, educators must critically evaluate AI chatbots' output and ensure that preservice teachers are trained to assess AI-generated content's credibility and ethics. By doing so, educational AI chatbots can become powerful tools in advancing education and preparing the next generation of teachers.
