The Promise of AI for Supporting Students with EBD
Imagine a classroom where a student’s smartwatch quietly alerts the teacher when the student’s stress levels begin rising, giving the teacher a chance to intervene early rather than waiting until frustration escalates. This type of early support is becoming possible with new AI-assisted tools designed to help students with emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD).
Students with EBD often face challenges in emotional regulation, maintaining attention, and social interactions. These are factors that influence both academic and behavioral outcomes. Teachers are turning to innovative tools to address these needs, and artificial intelligence (AI) offers one of the most promising pathways. AI can assist with early identification of emotional changes, individualized feedback, and real-time behavioral support.
According to Marino et al. (2023), AI can improve teacher efficiency, reduce workload, and support intervention planning for students with EBD. When used thoughtfully, AI tools can strengthen academic and behavioral progress by providing structure and timely feedback.
The Role of AI in Emotional and Behavioral Support
- Emotion Recognition and Monitoring
AI-based emotion recognition systems can analyze facial expressions, speech, and physical signals to identify stress or frustration before they escalate. These tools allow teachers to intervene early and adjust support based on students’ needs. Vistorte et al. (2024) found that AI emotion-assessment tools can help educators better understand students’ emotional states and respond more effectively. Digital tools that integrate wearables and mobile apps can also empower students to monitor their own emotions. Bettis et al. (2021) reported that technologies designed for emotion regulation can help users track physiological data such as heart rate or activity levels, encouraging reflection and self-management.
- Conversational AI and Social Skill Development
Conversational AI, such as chatbots, provides a nonjudgmental, safe space for practicing dialogue, empathy, and problem-solving. A review by Balan et al. (2024) found that conversational agents positively influenced emotional well-being and engagement among young users.
Similarly, He et al. (2023) reported that AI-driven conversational systems can improve coping skills, reduce anxiety, and support mental health when integrated thoughtfully into education and counseling contexts. These findings highlight AI’s potential to reinforce social-emotional learning (SEL) strategies commonly used with EBD populations.
- Teacher Support Through AI Data Insights
AI can assist teachers by simplifying data collection and analysis. AI platforms can summarize behavioral trends, generate progress reports, and suggest evidence-based interventions aligned with Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals. Laranjo et al. (2018) noted that AI systems, when paired with teacher judgement, enhance decision-making by turning complex data into clear, actionable insights. This allows teachers more time for direct instruction and relationship building. These are two of the most effective supports for students with EBD.
Implementation in the Classroom
To use AI effectively with students who have EBD, educators should:
• Start with small pilot tools such as emotion-monitoring apps or wearable sensors before adopting them widely.
• Integrate AI outputs into existing practices, such as behavior intervention plans or IEP progress notes.
• Keep human connection at the center: AI should support, not replace, teacher judgment.
• Follow privacy guidelines (FERPA and district policy) and obtain parent or guardian consent.
• Review and adjust supports regularly using AI-generated insights to guide instruction and behavioral planning.
Impact and Future Directions
The integration of AI in special education is still developing, but the research is promising. Studies show that AI can enhance emotional awareness, engagement, and behavioral consistency among students when combined with strong instructional design (Bettis et al., 2021; Marino et al., 2023).
As new technologies continue to evolve, the next step is helping educators build confidence in using AI safely and responsibly. With thoughtful implementation, AI has the potential to become a powerful tool in supporting emotional stability, academic engagement, and behavioral growth for students with EBD.
